The average home improvement customer generally has little or no previous knowledge regarding the products that go into a vinyl siding project.
It is not unusual for a potential contractor to take advantage of a customer’s lack of product knowledge.
Cutting back on material quality results in higher profits for the contractors. Believe it! It’s a very common practice. It’s a "what you don’t know won’t hurt you" scenerio. Unfortunately, cutting back on product quality does hurt you by compromising the long term performance and longevity of your siding project. The bottom line is less for you and more for your contractor.
Don’t get fooled! There are no less than a dozen or so specific siding products
that go into a siding project, and all of these products come in various price and quality levels. Ask questions about all the specific items such as starter-strip, insulation, sealants, perma-tabs, foundation caps, soffitt panels, aluminum trim coil, light blocks, and hose blocks. Even the vinyl siding will come in various thicknesses and qualities. Ask about custom trim items such as corner boards and gable vents. Lastly, discuss warranties and guarantees. Remember, it’s your money, not theirs!
