UNDERSTANDING THE HOME IMPROVEMENT PROCESS

Typical home improvement start times vary from one week to 90 days from the initial contract date. Improvements requiring custom sizes and design built products ie.

Windows, kitchens, sun-rooms always take longer, as a rule at least 45 days. Approximate start dates and estimated completion dates are required on your contract by the State of Connecticut. Remember, these dates can be affected by weather, strikes, supply problems and site and premit issues. Be fair with your contractor and try to understand his issues as well as your own.

When a job starts, you should expect your crew to stay on that job on a daily basis until it is finished.

Payment will be made on completion of all the work in the form of cash, check, or by signing off a completion certificate from the bank. Don’t sign off on payment unless the work is finished or very close to it. You may be able to give your contractor a break if a pair of shutters or a set of gutters , or a missing cabinet handle is on the way. Again, fair is fair. Remember, your contractor is the last one to get paid. Job sites should be left broom clean inside and neatly picked up outside and don’t be afraid to ask if they are not. It’s your money and you should be pleased with the results. The bottom line is that both you and your contractor should have had a mutually satisfactory experience. It is, after all, a team effort that makes any project run smoothly.
