UNDERSTANDING THE CONTRACTING PROCESS

Rule number one. Always make sure everything is in writing. That includes the little things or the "don’t worry, we’ll take care of it" items. Good contractors will always try to make you happy but don’t leave things up to chance.

Make sure you are given a three day right to cancel option in writing. It’s state law in Connecticut. Another recent Connecticut law is mandatory start and finish dates. These are required but can be affected by strikes, supply problems, and weather. Be fair with your contractor regarding these times but don’t expect to wait six months for a job to start and an unusual amount of time for it to be completed.

Make sure your contractor explains any financing options they have available.
Many large companies will allow you to bind a contract with their financing and allow you the option of paying cash at completion of the project with no cost to you for the financing. This is a great way to shop for a better finance rate and still get the work started. If you decide to use your contractor’s finance program have them explain rates and terms to you.

Make sure your contractor is licensed by the State of Connecticut and has all appropriate insurances. Don’t be afraid to sign a contract if you feel comfortable with your sales rep and you have covered all the details. Remember a good company will always stand behind its customer even if there are minor oversites on the contract. Again, only deal with well established companies that can provide lots of referrals.

Lastly, make sure complete copies of all agreements are left with you after everything is signed. Once you have signed everything and you feel assured you have chosen the right contractor, just sit back and relax, you’ve done your share of the work.
