UNDERSTANDING WARRANTEES AND GUARANTEES
First, the basic terminology’s are somewhat different. In the home improvement field warrantees are typically associated to the manufacturers and guarantees are generally applied to the labor. By definition alone, warrantees generally are prorated or they have certain caveats or exclusion. Labor guarantees are generally applied to the workmanship. Warrantees are typically pro-rated meaning the terms of coverage changes over a given time period. Labor guarantees are generally fully inclusive.
What does all this mean? Some good examples are:
Lifetime Siding Warrantee
-
The siding is warranteed for life not to buckle, sag, or crack.
-
Color will not fade more than 3 points.
-
The warrantee is transferable to subsequent owners is then covered for 5 years.
-
Registration Required.
-
Damage from chemical stains or excessive mildew buildup caused be lack of cleaning will not be covered.
YOU GET THE IDEA! Good coverage but not 100%.
One Year Labor Guarantee
We blew-it. We Fix it in the first year (no charge). Now that’s coverage.
Generally speaking, if you purchase high end products, you will have all the coverage you need. As you spend less, than expect to have less coverage. Don’t blame the manufacturers if you want cheap, it’s out there.
Make sure you understand what you are getting before you sign. Look for contractors that have been loyal to certain brands for long periods of time. There’s probably a good reason they have remained so. Like you, good contractors want good service too. Remember, a good contractor will be there to provide service down the road. So they are just as interested in quality and warranties as you. Conversely bad contractors could care less. They will buy what’s on sale future services and warrantees aside.
